Things have been largely hectic and anxious at home of late due to some financial distresses. Consequently, progress on the novel has been slowed. Because of this, I think my posts will be less involved this week.
Today, a few quotes on the subject of writing. What are some of your favorite quotes on writing?
When you are describing,
A shape, or sound, or tint;
Don’t state the matter plainly,
But put it in a hint;
And learn to look at all things,
With a sort of mental squint.
~Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll)
The artist’s only responsibility is his art. He will be completely ruthless if he is a good one…. If a writer has to rob his mother, he will not hesitate. ~Faulkner, quoted in M. Cowley, Writers at Work, 1958
Drama, instead of telling us the whole of a man’s life, must place him in such a situation, tie such a knot, that when it is untied, the whole man is visible. ~Leo Tolstoy
Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see in the making all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to survive as individuals. ~Don Delillo
