Susan Jacoby hits the nail on the head here in speaking about multiculturalism and the Left. “Tolerance” has somehow transformed into the means to be grossly and blatantly hypocritical. The name that you call yourself, in all of its grand intention, doesn’t seem to fit here. As Jacoby puts it, “it tends to excuse…religious and cultural practices that violate universal human rights.”
To be perfectly frank, it’s disgusting to think that political correctness would take the edge over the unbelievably evil human rights violations that exist in the Islamic world. I simply cannot understand it.
And I wholeheartedly agree, along with Jacoby, that Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s words ring true here:
Here is something I have learned the hard way, but which a lot of well-meaning people in the West have a hard time accepting: All human beings are equal, but all cultures and religions are not. A culture that celebrates femininity and considers women to be the masters of their own lives is better than a culture that mutilates girls’ genitals and confines them behind walls and veils or flogs and stones them for falling in love. . . . The culture of the Western Enlightenment is better.
So true. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Salman Rushdie, you got it right.
